Hesitation Change-of-Pace Attack

Sell a speed change to beat a defender

9 min
8 reps each direction
Intermediate

Why this drill

create separation through pace rather than extra moves.

Setup

Straight-line lane with 3 pace zones.

Instructions

  1. 1Attack a cone at game speed, then rock back to a near-stop hesitation.
  2. 2Snap back to full speed within one dribble of the hesitation.
  3. 3Keep the ball low during the hesitation so it can't be poked away.
  4. 4Finish every rep at the rim or with a pull-up.

Key feel

A real speed differential between the hesitation and the burst.

Success cue

Noticeable body/pace change without losing ball control.

Recommended reps

8 reps each direction

Progression

Add defender cues for when to burst.

Common mistake

Same-speed hesitation that doesn't actually freeze the defender.
