9 min
4 sets of 8 backhand reps
Intermediate

Why this drill

improve efficient lateral fielding options.

Setup

Coach alternates forehand/backhand grounders.

Instructions

  1. 1Start with feet square, then take a controlled angle to get the glove-side foot ahead of the ball.
  2. 2Field the ball out in front with the glove angled down and open.
  3. 3Field with a hop or plant that lets the throw follow immediately.
  4. 4Note any rep where the ball is played too far to the side or off-balance.

Key feel

A controlled angle that lets the backhand field cleanly and set up a throw.

Success cue

Cleaner fielding with fewer recovery steps.

Recommended reps

4 sets of 8 backhand reps

Progression

Add throw on move.

Common mistake

Rounding the ball or reaching across the body instead of angling early.
