One-Handed Backhand Extension Drill

Extend fully through the one-handed backhand

9 min
5 sets of 8
Intermediate

Why this drill

Improve the diagnosed technical behavior while preserving functional strengths.

Setup

Begin with shadow/rehearsal or controlled feed appropriate to the action.

Instructions

  1. 1Set a target cone well out in front and slightly to the side of the contact zone.
  2. 2Swing so the racquet head travels through and past the cone before finishing high.
  3. 3Check that the hitting arm is nearly straight at contact, not bent.

Key feel

Full arm extension through the ball and out toward the target.

Success cue

The targeted behavior becomes more repeatable on comparable balls without creating a new visible breakdown.

Recommended reps

5 sets of 8

Progression

Shadow/rehearsal → controlled feed → directional live ball → variable feed → point-based constraint → match-like execution.

Common mistake

Cutting the swing short with a bent, defensive arm.
